The Nomad Packing List

Also known as – what on earth am I taking with me to travel the world?

I’m going to be honest, packing excites me. Largely, I think, because it signifies that travel is just around the corner. The first time I went to Europe, I had my clothes laid out weeks in advance, and filled half my suitcase with things I never wore. When I went to Asia, I had notions of being a ‘proper’ backpacker, and filled my backpack with a relatively minimal selection of clothing that ranged from a couple of favourite pieces, to things I thought fit the ‘backpacker’ image.

Neither approach really worked for me. So packing to go to Europe, where style matters and it’s going to be the middle of winter, gave me the opportunity to try once again to find a packing list that works.

Travelling long term is different to travelling for a holiday, and since long term travel is my lifestyle, I’m going to keep bringing things that are much closer to me at home than the perfect backpacker image.

Clothing & Shoes

  • 5 t-shirts
  • 2 t-shirt dresses (For wearing on their own or with leggings)
  • 2 tank tops
  • 3 long sleeved tops (Once the weather begins to warm I’ll be swapping two of these out for more short-sleeved tops)
  • 1 chambray shirt (For layering)
  • 1 cardigan
  • 1 microfleece jumper
  • 3 pairs of leggings (1 black pair, 1 printed fleece-lined pair, 1 printed pair)
  • 1 pair of jeans
  • 2 pairs of shorts (Or maybe not. Given that I’m heading to winter, if anything has to be cut at the final test, these will be it.)
  • 2 skirts (1 short black, 1 colourful maxi)
  • 4 dresses (1 dressy, 1 skater, 1 long-sleeved, 1 maxi)
  • Sleep shirt and shorts
  • Running clothes (Sports bra, top & 3/4 leggings)
  • 3 pairs of tights (Including a fleece lined pair. These are amazing.)
  • Underwear, bras & socks (Not pictured)
  • Bikini & boardshorts
  • Gloves, scarf & beanie
  • Coat
  • 1 pair of thongs
  • 1 pair of fold-up ballet flats
  • 1 pair of converse (Not pictured)
  • One pair of vibrams
  • One pair of boots

And all of these, minus the boots and coat, fit in two packing cubes and a small packing sack, or loose in my pack. The boots and the coat are indulgence items for the European winter, and I’ll be wearing them every time I need to pack up and move along until the weather gets warmer, when I’ll ship the coat home!

Toiletries

  • Travel towel (Not pictured)
  • Solid Shampoo (I love Lush’s ‘New’ bar, and I also use it as soap)
  • Conditioner (Not pictured. I’m tempted to try a solid conditioner from either Lush or Toby and Rosie. Any suggestions?)
  • Razor + spare blades
  • Comb, hair ties, bobby pins & leave-in conditioner
  • Toothbrush and paste
  • Baby wipes
  • Deodorant
  • Nail file & tweezers
  • Moisturiser with sunscreen
  • Concealer, eyeshadow, mascara & lip stain
  • Paw paw ointment
  • Jewellery (Not pictured. I know many people leave their jewellery at home when they travel, but I have pieces I wear everyday and couldn’t imagine being without them! I’ll be taking my watch, a few rings, and a couple of necklaces.)
  • Aroamas Solid Perfume (I picked this up as a free sample and I love it!)

Gear & Technology

What to Pack to Travel Long Term - Tech

  • 13 inch MacBook Pro + charger
  • Canon 60D + charger + memory cards + lens wipes + Sigma 18-250mm lens + Tokina 11-16mm lens + plus UV and polarisation filters for each
  • Kindle + charger
  • iPhone 6 + charger
  • 1TB external hard drive
  • iPod + earphones
  • Travel adaptor (Which I’ll have to buy at some point as I can’t find my old one)

Miscellaneous

  • Sleeping bag liner
  • Journals and notebook
  • Pens and pencils
  • Water bottle
  • Travel mug and cinnamon tea (I love this tea so much, I couldn’t imagine not taking it with me)
  • Misc medical (Painkillers, antihistamine, bandaids, ginger tablets, iron tablets)
  • Sunglasses
  • A book (currently its my copy of The Hobbit, and I’ll buy a book at the airport, which will then get switched out at book exchanges – I love my kindle, but you just can’t beat regular old ink and paper.)

A note on birth control and ‘that time of the month’ – ladies, if you’re not using the Diva Cup or similar product, seriously consider checking it out. It’s a lot better for your wallet (and the environment), and I promise it’s not as gross as it seems. As for birth control, I chose to pass over the pill in favour of Implanon. I don’t need to worry about renewing or filling a prescription, I can’t forget to take it, and if I get sick my protection isn’t affected.

Of course, this packing list doesn’t cover what I’m taking specifically to trek in Nepal. That’s for next time!
